1. The “Brand Invisibility” Experiment in the Age of AI

I ran an experiment using an AI Agent I built myself.

I fed the same set of keywords — “EV thermal management system suppliers,” “Chinese precision machining manufacturers,” “scroll compressor components” — into ChatGPT, Claude, Kimi, and Tongyi Qianwen simultaneously. The results were unsettling: the top five recommendations were either American players like Hanon, Denso, and Sanden, or emerging manufacturers from India and Vietnam.

Chinese suppliers were virtually non-existent in the AI responses.

Not because these brands lack capability — but because they haven’t left a strong enough signal in the training data and citation sources that AI models rely on. There’s a term for this phenomenon: GEO (Generative Engine Optimization).

2. SEO → GEO: A Once-in-a-Generation Restructuring of Traffic

For the past 20 years, the holy grail of global branding was SEO — getting your website onto the first page of Google. In 2026, the rules have changed.

Visualizing the Traffic Migration

SEO→GEO Traffic Migration

In One Sentence

In 2021, without SEO, customers couldn’t find you.
In 2026, without GEO, you won’t exist in AI recommendations.
And AI recommendations are becoming the primary entry point for B2B procurement.

3. GEO 1.0 → GEO 2.0

Many people assume GEO is simply porting SEO keyword strategies onto AI platforms. That’s the most common misconception.

GEO 1.0 (2023-2025) GEO 2.0 (2026)
───────────────────── ─────────────────────
Keyword stuffing Structured data
AI-friendly article mass production Semantic alignment
Mass distribution to social media Trust signal building
Unstable results Sustainable AI visibility
Easily wiped out by algorithm updates Built on genuine authority

The core logic of GEO 2.0: AI doesn’t “search” for keywords — it “understands” where your brand genuinely stands in the industry. To be cited by AI, you must first be cited by others.

I set up my OpenClaw Agent to query five AI platforms daily (ChatGPT, Gemini, Claude, Kimi, Tongyi Qianwen) and analyze which brands they repeatedly recommended. Those brands shared three traits:

  1. ✅ Cited by authoritative sources (industry reports, research papers, reputable media)
  2. ✅ Complete structured data (clean Schema.org markup on their official sites)
  3. ✅ Multi-platform presence (LinkedIn, dedicated websites, technical blogs, vertical communities)

B2B Purchase Decision Path Changes

If you skip GEO, here’s what it means: you will never appear in AI recommendation lists. Even if your product outperforms the ones being recommended.

5. My GEO Research Toolchain

Every data point and insight in this article comes from a system I built myself. Three tools, up and running in about a week:

🔧 OpenClaw (AI Agent)

  • Automatically scrapes GEO industry reports, competitor movements, and market data
  • Batch-queries multiple AI platforms to track brand visibility changes
  • Distills key insights in real time

📚 Obsidian (Knowledge Base)

  • All data auto-archived as .md — plain text, never obsolete
  • Bi-directional links [[ ]] for building knowledge networks
  • Currently holds 150,000+ characters of GEO-related content

💻 Claude Code (Development)

  • Prototyped a brand visibility monitoring script in half a day
  • Prompt → runnable code — validate ideas at lightning speed

My Workflow

Toolchain Workflow

One week to set up, runs automatically every day. An Agent isn’t about saving you time — it’s about building a fundamentally new way to acquire information: systematically closing the information gap.

Check whether your brand appears in the AI’s answer.

You might be shocked by what you see.
